Wives richer than candidates

 SHILLONG: Wives of several Independent candidates are richer than their husbands who are contesting the upcoming Assembly elections from Ri Bhoi district of the State as shown in affidavits filed by the candidates before the returning officers.

Wife of Independent candidate Joberwel Lapang from Mawtnam in Ri-Bhoi has movable assets worth Rs 2.95 lakh and Rs 1.30 crore of immovable assets while the latter, who filed his nomination from Umsning constituency, has movable assets worth Rs 60,000 and no immovable asset.

Lapang, who passed Class XII, has Rs 10,000 cash in hand and Rs 50,000 deposited in the bank while his wife has Rs 20,000 cash and deposited Rs 1 lakh in the bank. His dependent owns a car (ML10 7330) worth Rs 3 lakh and his wife has five tolas of jewelry.

His wife has two acres of inherited agricultural land at Mawtnum worth Rs 30 lakh. She also owns eight acres of non-agricultural land at Mawtnum worth Rs 2 lakh. The approximate current market value of her possessions is Rs 50 lakh. She also owns a 2200 sq ft land for residential purpose at Mawtnum worth Rs 50 lakh. The total current market value of the possessions is Rs 1.30 crore.

Donlang Sohkhlet: Independent candidate from Umsning, Donlang Sohkhlet has movable assets worth Rs 21.80 lakh and immovable assets worth Rs 5 lakh while his wife has Rs 90 lakh of immovable assets and Rs 5 lakh in movable assets as per the affidavit filed before the Returning Officer in Ri-Bhoi.

A resident of Myrdon Mawtari in Ri Bhoi, Sohkhlet is a matriculate.

He has Rs 2 lakh cash and owns three vehicles– Esteem, Bolero and Verna (ML05 F 3468, ML05 F 3527, ML05 A 0002)-apart from 2 tolas of jewelry worth Rs 80,000. Sohkhlet also owns a 20826.375 sq ft land at Nongbah Myrdon worth Rs 5 lakh.

His wife on the other hand has Rs 3 lakh in cash and 5 tolas of jewelry worth Rs 5 lakh. She also owns land for commercial buildings at Lapalang and Nongmynsong in Shillong apart from land for residential building at Umpling with a total area of 3000 sqft, 5000 sqft and 8000 sqft respectively and the cost of the properties are Rs 30 lakh each.

Stanlywiss Rymbai : Rymbai of Kdonghulu village, Ri Bhoi who filed the nomination as independent candidate from Umsning constituency has movable assets worth Rs 10,20,000 while his spouse has Rs 6,25,000. He has immovable assets worth Rs 10 lakh and his wife’s immovable assets sum up to Rs 22 lakh.

Rymbai, who is also the sitting MLA of Umsning is a Class XII pass.

He has Rs 40,000 cash in hand and 1.80 lakh deposited in the bank while his wife has Rs 20,000 cash in ahnd Rs 3 lakh in the bank. He owns two cars (ML05 D 8813, ML10 4533) and his wife owns one car (ML05 D 8913) apart from 3 tolas of jewelry.

Gross total value of Rymbai’s possession is Rs 10.20 lakh whereas his wife’s is Rs 6.25 lakh.

He has 5 acres of land worth Rs 10 lakh while his wife owns 3 acres of land worth Rs 12 lakh.

His wife also owns a 3000 sqmtrs plot of land for commercial purpose which is on lease and 5 acres of land at 2000 sq ft (purchased in 1986) worth Rs 2 lakh. Rymbai’s total current market value is Rs 10 lakh whereas his wife has 22 lakh.

Besides, Lurshai Wahlang of Iewmawlong in Ribhoi, who filed the nomination as an independent candidate from Umsning constituency has movable assets worth Rs 8,83,442.31 and immovable assets worth Rs 50,05,000. He also has self acquired assets of Rs 58,88,442.31.

Wahlang who is an advocate by profession has a B Ed degree.

He has cash in hand worth Rs 1 lakh and in banks, he has Rs 2,19,961 and 3, 40,777 in separate accounts. He owns a maruti car— ML10 2912 worth Rs 2,22,704.31 and his gross total value comes to Rs 8,83,442.31.

His immovable assets include a residential building at village Iewmawlong with 3400 sqft purchased on 1989 at Rs 5000. His approximate current market value is Rs 50 lakh and total current market value is Rs 50,05,000.
