East Garo Hills bags MGNREGS award

 SHILLONG: The insurgency ravaged Community and Rural Development Blocks of Songsak and Samanda in East Garo Hills have made a record of sorts in implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, in the presence of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, presented the award to East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mantri for effective implementation of MGNREGS through high level of employment generation in challenging circumstances, during a function in New Delhi on Saturday.

The award was given to the Deputy Commissioner in his capacity as the District Programme Coordinator.

The district achieved 90.39 average person days (out of 100 person days) and provided a total of about 45 lakh man days. These figures are one of best recorded anywhere in the country.

17,770 households of the district received 100 days’ employment.
