SHILLONG: While questioning the entry of unqualified people and business tycoons into politics, MPCC chief DD Lapang said, “The State requires legislators who can contribute towards progress and development of the State.”
“In my 40-year-long career in politics, I have seen several legislators who did not speak even a single word in the Assembly,” Lapang said while addressing an election rally of Congress nominee Prestone Tynsong at Pynursla on Saturday.
According to the MPCC chief, some people consider the Assembly as a trading centre. “But now some of the business tycoons and coal barons have realised their mistake and are leaving politics,” he said indirectly referring to former Rymbai legislator Nehlang Lyngdoh who has decided not to contest the ensuing Assembly election.
Congress party has, however, allotted tickets to several prominent businessmen and coal barons to contest February 23 Assembly polls.
They include Mohindro Rapsang for Shillong West, Ngaitlang Lyngdoh (Umroi).
Meanwhile, praising Tynsong, Lapang said the Congress legislator has proved himself both as a legislator as well as a Minister.
“I know the people have been demanding upgradation of Pynursla is to a Civil Sub Division. I want to assure that this dream would become a reality,” he said.
Former Congress minister KK Dkhar was conspicuous by his absence during Saturday’s rally.
Though Dkhar did not join the race from Pynursla, his supporters however decided to support Banalari Khongwar, the candidate of the United Democratic Party (UDP). Khongwar owns Banalari World Cars.
Independent MLA from Nongshken Donkupar Massar is also contesting from Pynursla.
