M’laya earn Overall Champions title in karate

SHILLONG: In a proud moment for the state, Meghalaya won the position of Overall Champions at the XXX Japan Karate Association of India (JKAI) National Training Camps and Karate Championship 2013 held at the SAG Complex, Goa, from January 22-28.

The team, part of the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association, brought home a large haul of medals – 46 in all – 22 of which were gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze.

All 22 members (nine girls and 13 boys) in the team came home with at least one medal.

The karetekas (karate athletes) participated in a wide range of events, right from the U-10 to the over-21 age categories and in kumite (sparring), kata (demonstration), individual and team events.

Of particular note were Isadora Lyngdoh among the girls, who bagged five gold medals in U-10 and sub-junior events, and Gerrard A Nongkhlaw, who won four gold, also at the U-10 and sub-junior level.

ST employee shines

One of the karatekas to take part was Allister B Kharwanlang, a Shillong Times employee, who won a gold medal in the Men’s Team Kata event, along with Mingson Rymbai and Mlenkir Suting.
