SHILLONG: While Congress has officially fielded 60 candidates to contest the Meghalaya assembly polls, the list provided by the Election Department says that 61 Congress candidates are in the fray for February 23 polls.

An official with the Election Department said that two Congress contenders — Dr Adviser Pariong and Nestingdhar Nongdkhar – have filed nominations for Nongstoin seat.

It may be mentioned here that Congress has officially fielded Dr Pariong from Nongstoin. Political parties sometimes do field ‘substitute’ candidates.

During the scrutiny on Thursday, one name would be rejected, the Election Department official said.

Similarly, two UDP candidates — Nasar Marwein and Nerius Syiemlieh – have submitted nominations for Nongstoin.

UDP has officially nominated Marwein for this seat.

There are two UDP candidates, who filed the nomination for Raliang. They are Kongstar Sungoh (official candidate of the party) and Biris Pasi.
