12 candidates to vie for Mawshynrut seat

SHILLONG: Mawshynrut constituency will have the highest number of candidates at 12 among the 60 constituencies in Meghalaya.

Among the 12 candidates, eight are Independents. Besides the Independents, the constituency will witness a multi-cornered contest with UDP, HSPDP, Congress and NPP fielding their respective candidates.

Mawshynrut is closely followed by North Tura and Rajabala as both will have 11 candidates each. Rajabala will witness the participation of six Independents while seven Independents will contest from North Tura.

Similarly, Tirikila and Gambegre will have ten candidates each.

Interestingly, Sohiong is the only constituency which will witness a straight contest between Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh (Congress) and UDP’s Breston Kharbuli.

District-wise, West Garo Hills will have the highest number of candidates as altogether 93 nominations were filed from the district followed by East Khasi Hills district at 78.

The district-wise break-up is West Khasi Hills – 33, Ri Bhoi – 31, East Garo Hills – 23, West Jaintia Hills – 22, South Garo Hills – 21, South West Garo Hills – 17, South West Khasi Hills – 15. 11 nominations were filed from East Jaintia Hills and North Garo Hills each.
