Guwahati: The Government of Assam on Friday gave the nod to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe into the huge seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) by the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Guwahati from three accused persons on August 30 last year.

The three accused persons who were on their way from Malda in West Bengal through Guwahati in a Chevrolet Tavera vehicle were rounded up by officials from DRI, Guwahati at Beltola Chariali in the city.

Fake Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 11.99 lakh were found in their possession. A complaint was lodged with CBI by DRI, Guwahati to this effect.

The State Government decided to hand over the case to the CBI ‘as the seizure is of substantial nature having involvement of inter-state criminals’, official sources said here.

While doing so, the State Government also complied to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) letter, dated May 12, 2002, to the States on FICN which stated that the State Government may consider entrusting the investigation to the CBI where there is definite indication that the currency seized is brought from across the border and the seizure has internal security ramifications or the seizure is large.

The State Government has given approval on the basis of the MHA’s letter, thus facilitating the investigation into the FICN by the CBI. (UNI)
