SHILLONG: Director General (Civil Defence and Home Guards and Prisons) Prem Singh on Friday assumed office as the new Director General of Police (DGP), replacing Kulbir Krishan, who was removed from the post by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday.

Krishan, who will now hold charge as DG (Prisons and Civil Defence and Home Guards), was removed by the ECI on the basis of a complaint lodged by the State Election Department.

The new DGP has a tough job at hand to ensure a free and fair election in the State in the wake of growing insurgency concerns in certain pockets of Garo Hills.

Singh had been appointed acting DGP in the interim period after the superannuation of former DGP SB Kakati and appointment of N Ramachandran as the State police chief.

Meanwhile, Prem Singh refused to talk to the media after taking over as the DGP.
