Pre-poll violence in Tripura, Nagaland

Agartala/ Kohima: Violence continued followed by political clashes ahead of Tripura Assembly elections on February 14 in different parts in the state. Both the major parties — CPI(M) and Congress were accused of fomenting the supporters.

After political clash in Manu Bazaar of south Tripura on February 7, as many as 36 people from both CPI-M and Congress had been injured in two different constituencies – Boxanagar and Mandai under west Tripura in separate incidents.

However, DGP Sanjoy Sinha said the police had taken preventive steps to avert any pre or post poll violence besides, undertaking initiatives to mobilise paramilitary forces in the troubled areas.

“We have urged the political parties to restrain from violent move, so that the biggest democratic exercise can be performed by the citizens in a fearless manner,”Mr Sinha said.

According to report, in Boxanagar the, Congress candidate Billal Mian was prevented from entering into the house of a CPI-M supporter on Friday as part of poll campaign and immediately the insulted Congress workers allegedly thrashed the house owner.

Later, CPI-M supporters organised counter attack on Mian and his party supporters and left 16 people injured.

On the other, CPI-M supporters allegedly destroyed Congress booth offices and campaign materials in Mandai and other tribal dominated parts of west Tripura.

The CPI-M is also accused of causing harm to life and property of Congress supporters in Teliamura, Amarpur, Khowai and Kanchanpur.

3 hurt, vehicles damage in pre-poll violence in Nagaland

In pre-poll violence in Mokokchung district, at least 3 persons were injured and some vehicles were damaged.

According to sources on Saturday, election related violence was reported at Mokokchung village under Mokokchung district on Friday night where reports of different political parties clashed.

Sources said the clash left some vehicles being damaged included 2 Bikes, a Gypsy and a Van, besides a house was also ransacked.

However, there were no reports of any casualty. Altogether eight persons were arrested.

Later, the police while searching the ransacked house reportedly belonging to one Lanumongla recovered a huge quantity of liquor from the house.

The police subsequently seized the liquor and have been already forwarded to the courts.

It is to be noted here that Mokokchung village falls under Mongoya Assembly Constituency where there is a straight contest between the ruling NPF and opposition Congress.

In another election related violence in Mokokchung district has left three persons injured at Molungkimong village under Alongtaki assembly constituency.

The incident occurred Thursday evening, when supporters of different parties with clashed each other, which resulted in injuries to three persons.

Later, police and Indian Reserve Battalion personnel reached the village and took stock of the situation.

However, the village council told the police that the matter has been settled amicably.

Meanwhile, police conducted searches and recovered and seized some arms and ammunition from a house, the owner of which managed to escape.

The recovered items included one .22 rifle (Czech made), one muzzle loading, one .22 pistol (country made) along with one magazine, four nos. gelatine sticks, fuse (2 feet approx.) four numbers, gelatine stick cap three nos., .22 ammunition (18 numbers.).

Police said further investigation is on.

Mokokchung police Friday dismantled an illegal check post erected by some persons near Longmisa village.

It was reported that some persons who erected the check post were reportedly stopping vehicles and frisking the people.

However, when police reached the spot, no one was present at the post, sources said. (UNI)
