SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that the State needs to have a single party Government for its overall growth and development and at the same time has ruled out possibilities of frequent change of government if Congress retains power after February 23 elections.
“The party this time will give utmost importance to the promises made in the manifesto. There will be no room for anything which can lead to instability. We are not going to repeat our past mistakes,” Dr Sangma said while addressing newsmen after the release of the party manifesto here on Monday.
While exuding confidence that Congress would secure an absolute majority, the Chief Minister said, “The State needs to have a single party Government for its overall growth and development.”
He said the people of the State needed to realize that coalition governments have their shortcomings and limitations.
“Let us have a clear mandate to ensure a better future for the State,” Chief Minister said.
When ask if the presence of rebel candidates would affect the party’s prospects in the ensuing elections, he admitted that these rebels would definitely eat up some Congress votes. “I, however, do not foresee any threat to the party’s prospects.”
“The party has got its own mechanism to garner votes,” Dr Sangma said.
When ask whom the party is projecting as the chief ministerial candidate, he said, “Congress does not believe in such system.”
“The party legislators would decide their leader,” he said.
When pointed out that several leaders have started projecting themselves as contenders for the chief minister’s post, he said, “There is nothing wrong in this.”
On the passing of the ‘flawed’ Lokayukta Bill, which was returned by the Governor without giving his assent, the Chief Minister said, “We will take up the issue after the election.”
