SHILLONG: BJP leaders, Bijoya Chakraborty and Smriti Irani missed the opportunity to campaign in Garo Hills on Tuesday as the chopper in which they were traveling could not land in the specific locations in West and South West Garo Hills.

The State BJP leadership, meanwhile, asked the Chief Electoral Officer to take action against the Deputy Commissioners of both the districts.

The copies of the complaint were also sent to the election officials based in Delhi.

“With great anguish we feel that the tours of the two leaders were sabotaged by the respective Deputy Commissioners”, the state BJP president HS Syiemlieh said in a statement.

According to Syiemlieh, on February 12, the details of helicopter landing permission and technical information given by the administration to the party workers which was subsequently passed on to pilots turned out to be incorrect.

“This resulted in helicopter carrying two VIPs hovering in the air for hours posing serious threats to their lives”, Syiemlieh said.

According to BJP, the helicopter somehow returned to Guwahati safely and the election meeting had to be cancelled. This resulted in huge loss of resources and disappointment amongst the public who came to attend the meeting, the BJP leader said.

“We demand that the two Deputy Commissioners be suspended immediately and strong action be taken against these officers”, Syiemlieh said
