SHILLONG: The AICC general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Mukul Wasnik has said that the party does not believe in the policy of projecting any one as a chief ministerial candidate.

“We have got an inherent system where the newly elected Congress legislators would discuss the leadership issue. The party legislators would elect their leader who would ultimately become the chief minister,” Wasnik said while addressing newsmen here on Wednesday. He was responding to a query whether the party has projected the MPCC president DD Lapang, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma or former Union Minister Vincent H Pala as its chief ministerial candidate. When asked how many seats the party expects to win in the ensuing Assembly polls, he said that it would be too premature to predict. “We are confident that we would get an absolute majority,” he said. While referring to the UDP statement that they would prefer to sit in the Opposition than joining the Congress-led government, the MPCC president said, “We would have to see whether they really mean what they have said.” Referring to the allegation made by the BJP that the Congress was using militants to win the elections particularly in Garo Hills, Wasnik said, “The BJP is trying to get media attention by coming up with this kind of allegation.”
