SHILLONG: The NCP has urged upon the Election department to provide security to its party candidate from Mahendraganj, Mafiara T Sangma, who is facing security threats from some unknown miscreants.

In a letter addressed to Chief Electoral Officer P Naik on Thursday, NCP State president Sanbor Shullai lamented that the Government was being insensitive towards the security of a young woman candidate who is only 26 years old.

“The Government had two days ago provided two constables for her security but only for two hours which was later withdrawn without any rhyme or reason or any information,” Shullai said.

He also wondered if the delay in providing security to the NCP candidate was because she is contesting against the Chief Minister’s wife Dikkanchi D Shira.

Meanwhile, Shullai also raised the issue of violation of model code of conduct by Shillong South candidate Manas Chaudhuri (Congress) relating to the construction of road from one Shyam Thapa’s house up to the MES wall at Jhalupara (Cantonment), Shillong.

“The Construction has been going on despite the model code of conduct being in force. The sanction by Manas Chaudhuri is also reflected in his booklet Tyrst with Mawprem,” Shullai said. He also stated that a complaint in this connection had been made to the central observer Navin Mittal but not action was taken in this regard.
