Arms seized, Vehicles damage in poll-violence in Nagaland

Kohima: The Mokokchung Police has seized huge cache of arms and weapons Motor Vehicle Check Point (MVCP) at Sewak Gate at Mokokchung town Thursday morning and some vehicles were damaged in poll-related violence in the district.

Briefing media persons at his office last evening Mokokchung Superintendent of Police said that while conducting check at the MVCP, seized 1 Berretta Italy made .22 pistol with 8 live rounds from the possession of one person and a .30 US Carbine with 10 live rounds in the vehicle of an ex-Minister.

He said that this is a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct and that a case has been registered at Police Station II.

The SP said besides this weapons, one sack of marble along with catapults were also seized from a mini truck and subsequently 13 persons were arrested in this connection. said that these vehicles were in the convoy of a candidate who was going to Longkhum village to declare his candidature. Also during the checking, 2 VIP beacon lights were also removed and seized from some vehicle.

Meanwhile, he added that last evening, police got reports about some vehicles being damaged by miscreants along the highway near Aolijen and Ungma in the district.

Immediately, the police rushed to the spot and found three vehicles badly damaged. Of the three vehicles, 1 vehicle was about to get burnt but the timely intervention of fire tenders of Fire Brigade at the scene could help prevent the vehicle from catching fire. However, the fire spread to the nearby bushes and consumed a large tract of forest.

The Ungma villagers rushed to douse the flames and could control the fire from spreading further.

Election related violence has crept into Koridang Assembly Constituency.

The incident left a total of three vehicles getting damaged though there were no official reports of injuries to any person.

The incident happened after a particular candidate tried to enter the Longkhum village to declare his candidature.

The chairman of Longkhum Village council C. Angang Jamir while talking to the administration and police officers, who rushed to the spot said that the council members were stationed at Alichen explained the candidate that the village gate is closed to outsider due to reason of a boy from the village being abducted by some underground groups and that almost all the villagers are out of the village in search of the boy.

Thus it is impossible to have a meeting like a declaration program in the village as the atmosphere was not conducive, the Council chairman added, and said the candidate subsequently returned. but the supporters who accompanied the candidate got furious and started to pelt stones besides setting fire to the nearby bushes which was also accompanied by firing of gun shots before leaving.
