Tezpur: Former Congress minister Ripun Bora was injured today when a rival party supporter hit him at a Panchayat poll vote counting centre in Gohpur in lower Assam’s Sonitpur district, official sources said.

As Bora was congratulating his victorious party candidate at the counting centre in Chariduar College, the son of a losing candidate hit him causing injury on his forehead, the sources said.

The former education minister rushed to a hospital and was released after first aid. The assailant identified as Rupen Biswas was apprehended by police, sources said.

Another Congress politician, former Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri Anowar Hussain, was seriously injured on Thursday after inmates of a relief camp attacked members of a Congress party fact-finding team in violence-hit Goalpara district of Assam.

Meanwhile, an independent panchayat candidate allegedly committed suicide on Friday after losing an election in Assam’s Kamrup district, police sources said. Mintu Das contested from 114 Ganmou village panchayat in Sualkuchi and lost the elections.

He later hanged himself in his house, the sources added. (PTI)
