SHILLONG: In separate incidents suspected GNLA militants shot dead a Nokma of Daribokgre near Nokrek Biosphere Reserve bordering East and West Garo Hills on Thursday evening while a separate group of militants fired at Williamnagar market on Friday afternoon.

According to police, the Nokma identified as Spinder Areng was shot dead by GNLA militants on Thursday at around 6:30pm suspecting him to be a police informer.

On Friday afternoon, the militants fired in the air at Williamnagar market creating panic among the traders in the area.

Police suspect the role of either ANVC (B) or GNLA behind the Williamnagar market firing incident. The militants escaped probably crossing the Simsang river.

Ten companies of additional central paramilitary forces are already camping in Garo Hills in view of the February 23 election.

Since the time suspected ANVC (B) cadres attacked Williamnagar jail and killed two jail staff on February 2, there has been no let up in the violent incidents involving militants.

Blame game by both GNLA and ANVC (B) continued after the killing of the jail staff with senior police officials including former DGP Kulbir Krishan and East Garo Hills police chief JFK Marak coming under the criticism of the two rebel outfits.
