HNLC calls bandh on poll day

 SHILLONG: The proscribed HNLC has called a 36-hour bandh to boycott the Assembly polls scheduled for February 23 in the State.

The 36-hour bandh would be effective from 6 pm of February 22 to 6am of February 24. This is the first time that the banned outfit has called a bandh to boycott elections in the State.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said that the outfit will continue to boycott and disrupt all Indian elections including the Lok Sabha elections.

“We urge upon the Hynniewtrep People to keep away from the polls,” the statement said.

“The Government of India should clarify as to why the standstill agreement that was signed on August 9, 1947 terminated forcefully,” the statement added.

The statement further said that the outfit wants an immediate repatriate of all the ‘foreigners’ gifted the ‘status of refugees since 1971-72’ (Bangladesh).
