SHILLONG: In what could further complicate the numbers game in case of a hung Assembly post election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced that it has an internal alliance with the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the party has arrangements in place with PA Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) too.
The revelations were made by BJP’s North Eastern organising secretary P Chandrashekhar who was in the city on Tuesday.
“If both the UDP and NPP get between 20-22 seats we will help them form the next government with the help of some Independents,” Chandrashekhar said.
The BJP’s North Eastern Organising Secretary also said that the party is in talks with NPP.
Chandrashekhar attributed the party’s decision to field candidates only in 13 out of the 60 seats to its arrangement with NPP.
It may be mentioned that even in the year 2008
several political parties apart from Congress had formed the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government which collapsed within a year.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister of Goa, Francis D’Souza, who was also in the city said the BJP is not at all communal as accused by other political parties.
“In Goa BJP has more Christians than secular Congress,” D’Souza told reporters here adding that the people of Meghalaya need better governance and not assurances.
Commenting on the impact of former BJP MLA AL Hek’s desertion of the party D Souza said, “The Congress leader L Feleiro had then asserted that the BJP would have to close its shop in Meghalaya but instead their shop was closed in Goa.”
He also said that money power plays a big role in elections both in Meghalaya and other parts of the country.
