Several arrests following cash seizures

SHILLONG: Police on Thursday evening seized 38 bottles (half) liquor from one private Maruti car (ML 10 A7694) at Mawlai Nonglum driven by Royal Syiemlieh believed to be a supporter of UDP candidate from Mawlai Embhah Syiemlieh as a UDP flag was also found from his possession.

The driver has been arrested and the items have been seized by the police.

In another similar incident, Static Surveillance Team on Thursday evening seized Rs 6 lakh from one Shemphang Mukhim of Lawmali Meter Factory at near Anjalee.

According to the election officials, the authorities cannot establish which party Mukhim represents and he they are yet to ascertain whether the money was meant for election purpose or something else.

“We have asked the person to produce his document to substantiate his claim. He claimed that the money was drawn in his wife’s name and is actually meant for house construction”, election officials said adding that enquiry is still on.

In another incident, the Static Surveillance Team seized Rs 55,000 from one Chial Shylla of Khliehtyrshi in West Jaintia Hills and Rs 1,25,000 from Drim Tyngkang of Raliang, West Jaintia Hills at near Anjalee, Shillong on Thursday morning.

In this case too, the officials could not ascertain which party these two women belong to but the money has been seized as the two persons could neither provide documents nor answers to substantiate the reasons for carrying huge sum of money. On February 20 at around 12.30 am, Flying Squad intercepted two motorcycle riders, Nemson Sangma and Gama Sangma at Bogadol under Tikrikilla PS (WGH) and recovered Rs 20,600 and Rs. 25,700 respectively from their possession. During enquiry, they claimed that they are the party workers of Michael T. Sangma, Independent candidate from Tikrikilla constituency. Further, cash amounting to Rs. 1,39,000 was also recovered and seized from one Tata Indigo car (ML-08C-3374) driven by Ranjit Rabha.
