SHILLONG: Archbishop Dominic Jala on Friday urged the people to vote for those candidates who can legislate for the good of the State and the development of the individuals.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Jala said that the stand of the Church is very clear that every citizen has the democratic right and duty to exercise his/her franchise in a peaceful manner to elect good candidates.

“We look for candidates who can ensure that the laws are enacted which will defend the rights of the poor and the needy. Only this will eradicate poverty and reduce unemployment,” Jala said.

According to the Archbishop, the Church which is concerned over the future of the citizens and the State wants the candidates to remember that there is no short cut to success.

Referring to the scripture readings of last Sunday, the Archbishop said everyone should avoid shortcut to success. “Jesus had overcome the temptation of adopting short cuts to success, thereby giving a message that we cannot presume to be more than what we are,” he said.

Reiterating the need to have a peaceful poll, the Archbishop also said that violence is not a survival way.

“The message is that there is nothing like hard work which can only ensure ultimate victory,” the Archbishop said.
