SHILLONG: UDP candidate from East Shillong constituency and party working president, Bindo Mathew Lanong, has slammed the Returning Officer of his constituency for issuing show cause notice to him alleging that his interview, which had appeared in the press, comes under the purview of ‘paid news’.

“I am surprised by this show cause notice since it was the press who had approached me for the interview. I do not think there is any problem since this kind of interview of a political leader is always carried in the media,” Lanong said while speaking to newsmen after casting his vote here on Saturday.

Surprisingly, a member of the ‘committee on paid news’ revealed that the members had never met, despite a notification regarding the formation of the committee by the Governor.

The Returning Officer, while acting on his own, issued show cause notices to candidates alleging that their interviews comes under the purview of ‘paid news’.

It was informed that a similar show cause notice was served on South Shillong Congress candidate Manas Chaudhuri, whose interview had also appeared in the press.
