Guwahati: A women’s rights activist group today demanded a judicial probe into the mysterious disappearance of teacher-activist Majoni Das after the hardliner ULFA faction claimed that she had joined the outfit.
In an e-mailed statement, WinG-India urged the Government of Assam to order a judicial inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the disappearance of Ms Das.
It also asked the state government to submit the judicial commission’s inquiry report to Gauhati High Court, which yesterday directed the state government to file the affidavit within four weeks, the statement added.
A resident of Demow in Sivsagar district and a lecturer in Purva Bharati Educational Trust in Jorhat, Ms Das was reported missing by her family since February 10 after she left home to purportedly visit the Sivsagar Superintendent of Police’s office.
She was asked to visit the SP’s office by police personnel who had come to her house on February 8, her family had claimed.
The ULFA’s hardliner faction, in an email yesterday, said Ms Das has joined the outfit and is currently in its camp.
The family members of the missing woman had earlier accused the Sivsagar SP and other police personnel for being responsible for her disappearance.
The WinG India also appealed to NHRC and NCW to take cognizance of the case and issue directives to Assam authorities to speed up the process of investigation and ensure the safety and protection of Ms Das and her family members.
It also requested the Assam Government to direct news agencies to preserve the source of information from ULFA whether sent by fax or email (IP address) to enable the judicial commission of inquiry to examine. (UNI)
