SHILLONG: Mystery surrounds the death of the school girl who is a gang rape victim allegedly involving Meghalaya Police Sub Inspector SN Roy in 2011.

The girl, a class XII student, who was allegedly gang raped by Sub-Inspector Roy at a city hotel in March, 2011, died in an accidental fire on Monday.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang on Tuesday informed that the girl had received burn injuries in an accidental fire as per the statement of the family.

The family has told the police that the incident took place while she was cooking food.

She succumbed to her injuries on Monday at a city hospital.

The accused cop had absconded to Bihar in April after taking unauthorized sick leave soon after the incident came to light. However, he surrendered before the Court of Judicial Magistrate MB Challam in July that year.

Meanwhile, a police official informed that investigating into the matter has begun and the postmortem reports and other details are being awaited.

Besides Roy, police had arrested four others – Bobby Jyrwa Nongsiej, Johny Kshiar, Brando Nongrum and Angel Dulian (classmate of the victim) – who were also allegedly involved in the gang-rape.

When asked whether the accused cop will be questioned in this regard, the police sources said, “He was accused of rape and not of burning the girl.”
