SHILLONG: Though the final results of the Assembly election in Meghalaya are expected only by 12 noon on Thursday, the Congress party has already projected four probable candidates for the Chief Minister’s post.

Congress sources on Wednesday informed that the names of Dr Mukul Sangma, DD Lapang, HDR Lyngdoh and Prestone Tynsong are doing the rounds for the Chief Minister’s post.

The sources also revealed that there might be an internal tussle within the party to elect the next leader with so many contenders for the top post.

“We have to wait and see how many seats the party manages to win after the counting of votes on Thursday. If more candidates win from Garo Hills then Dr Sangma would ultimately emerge as the undisputed leader,” the Congress sources said, adding, “The problem would be more acute if more Congress candidates win from Khasi-Jaintia Hills since the other contenders for the Chief Minister’s post all hail from the region.”

Congress party sources also revealed that former Union Minister of State and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala is also ‘playing his card’ by indirectly projecting the name of HDR Lyngdoh for the Chief Minister’s post.

The party sources, however, said that the final selection of the candidate for the Chief Minister’s post would depend on the newly elected Congress MLAs.

“The newly elected MLAs would elect the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader who would ultimately become the CM,” the sources added.
