SHILLONG: For the first time, the State Legislative Assembly will have as many as 13 Independent MLAs, most of whom have secured convincing wins in the election, results of which were announced on Thursday.
Independents have registered win in all the districts except in East Khasi Hills.
Independent candidate from Mowkaiaw, Robinus Syngkon registered a win with a margin of 694 votes over sitting legislator ECB Bamon (NPP).
In Sutnga-Saipung, Hopeful Bamon emerged victorious with a margin of 1462 votes over his nearest rival and sitting MLA Shitlang Pale (Congress).
In Khliehriat, Independent Justine Dkhar managed to win the election with a margin of 1638 votes against nearest rival Finelynes Bareh, also an Independent.
Stephanson Mukhim managed to win from Amlarem with a margin of 1134 votes over sitting Congress legislator Lakhmen Rymbui.
Former HNLC leader Julias Dorphang who contested from Mawhati as an Independent defeated UDP’s Donbok Khymdiet by 1159 votes.
Brigady Marak, Independent candidate from Bajengdoba also secured a narrow victory of 220 votes against Congressman Adolf Lu Hitler R Marak while the son of Charles Pyngrope, David A Nongrum won the election from Mawryngkneng with a margin of 626 votes against Pynehborlang Mukhim (Congress).
Michael Sangma won from Tikrikilla with a thumping margin of 1702 votes against Rahinath Barchung of the Congress, while Ashahel D Shira managed a win with 891 votes in Rajabala constituency, defeating nearest rival Dr Azad Zaman (Independent).
Independent candidate John Leslee Sangma had a tough fight but managed to win the South Tura seat with a narrow lead of 18 votes over Congress’ Billykid A Sangma.
Saleng A Sangma, who was denied the Congress ticket, got the better of Besterfield N Sangma with a huge margin of 3457 votes.
In Rongara Siju, Rophul S Marak managed a win with a lead of 656 votes against Francis Pondit R Sangma of the Congress. The Baghmara seat went to Independent candidate Samuel M Sangma who won with a margin of 3587 votes against another Independent Sirgan A Sangma.
