Quelling instability

SHILLONG: With Dr Mukul Sangma taking oath as the Chief Minister for the second successive term, most of the Congress MLAs and party functionaries have now pledged all necessary support to the Chief Minister to ensure stability in the Government.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang, who was a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post, said, “We will further strengthen his (Mukul’s) hands to ensure that the Government lasts for the full term.”
Pointing out that there is no scope for any instability in the party he said that it is their responsibility to ensure that development of the State is achieved.
“People may do astrological readings about instability but we do not believe in that,” Lapang added.
East Shillong MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh, was also all praise for Dr Sangma and termed him a ‘good captain’. She said that the MLAs would want him to execute the party manifesto on the ground as the manifesto has covered all the important sectors of the State including the welfare of the common man.
“You cannot take away the glory of his personality that has helped Congress to garner huge support in the State,” she said.
Stating that Dr Sangma has amazing network, she said that he has been able to connect Meghalaya through commerce, health policies and improvements in the tourism sector.
“He is a good captain and he will steer the ship forward,” she added.
When asked about the fear of instability, she said that the Congress high command is very strict and if any one crosses the line, the high command will take stringent action.
“I don’t foresee any instability and legislators too must concentrate on their work rather than mere gimmicks,” she added.
MPCC working president and Williamnagar legislator, Deborah Marak, said that the legislators are hoping that Mukul Sangma will deliver the goods.
“We all know his ability from how he runs the Government and we are hoping that he will do well as he is a dynamic leader,” she said, while stating that the developmental works in the State would continue under his leadership.
Pynthorumkhrah legislator and former GAD Minister, AL Hek, also termed Dr Mukul Sangma as young and dynamic and added that cooperation of all MLAs is required for stability in the Government.
It is noteworthy that political rumblings have been a recurrent phenomenon in the State and so far very few Governments have been able to last their full term.
Since 2008, a total of four Governments ruled the State and three of them collapsed due to the instability factor.
