SHILLONG: A first-year student of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong, drowned here at Sweet Falls on Sunday afternoon.

The student has been identified as Kartik Mishra (23), a resident of Kolkata.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the victim’s colleagues who went there are being questioned.

“We are still investigating into the matter,” he said.

Sources from the IIM, Shillong, said that altogether 18 boys had gone to the spot for trekking when the victim slipped and this happened probably because he was exhausted as they had to trek for almost 45 minutes.

The body was fished out from the pool by divers of the Meghalaya Fire Service.

According to sources, the institution held a meeting soon after the incident and is contemplating to conduct its own inquiry to ascertain the facts.

The body has been sent to Shillong Civil Hospital for post mortem.
