SHILLONG: Meghalaya DGP Prem Singh has expressed concern over the laxity in awarding due punishment to the police personnel for the various offences committed by them.
In a recent circular issued to all the senior police officials and SPs, Singh, while citing the guidelines of National Human Rights Commission, said that in a number of cases of human rights of violations, the punishment awarded to the delinquent officers in the disciplinary proceedings is not commensurate with the gravity of the offences.
The DGP, however, did not reveal the offences committed by the police officers or their names in the circular.
“There are also instances where no departmental action is taken against the delinquent police officials, while in some of the cases, a mere warning is issued or an adverse entry is ordered in the disciplinary proceedings”, Singh said.
The DGP asked all the SPs and commandants of the armed battalions to take necessary steps “to ensure that punishment awarded in all such cases is commensurate with the gravity of the misconduct of the officials concerned”.
