TURA: The FKJGP, Garo Hills Zone on Wednesday shot off a letter to State Power Minister Clement Marak through the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, informing that the Federation has resolved to restrict the office functioning of the MeECL in the five districts of Garo Hills in the form of ‘office picketing’ until the completion of the ‘Agia project’.
The FKJGP said the State Power department has only a single transmission line connecting the whole of Garo Hills to the main Umiam Power Station via Nongstoin and Nangalbibra and as per the information received from the MeECL officials the frequent black outs is due to the ‘fault in line’ between Nongstoin and Nangalbibra of West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills respectively.
Further, most of the sites of the transmission are situated in non-motorable places making it harder for the MeECL officials to fix or locate any malfunctioning as a result of which, the five districts of Garo Hills often plunge into darkness for hours on end without any solution.
The Federation also said that they have been informed that the State Government had initiated an alternative transmission line via Agia in Goalpara district of Assam some years back, but the project is yet to see the light of day.
“We are of the opinion that a permanent solution to these frequent black outs should be put in place immediately,” said FKJGP Garo Hills president Pritam Marak, adding that the completion of the Agia transmission line shall provide the much-needed solution to the pending enigma.
Further, urging the Power Minister to put the woes of the people of Garo Hills as the highest priority, the FKJGP asserted that in view of the ever retiring hope of the people regarding the power scenario in the five districts of Garo Hills, the Federation has resolved to indefinitely restrict the functioning of the MeECL offices in Garo Hills till the completion of the ‘Agia project’.
