SHILLONG: Despite large scale consumption of meat in Meghalaya, there is a huge shortage in the quantity of beef and pork produced in the State.

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Deborah Marak on Wednesday informed the Assembly that the shortfall of beef accounts to 8932 tons per year while pork falls short by 1395 tons per year.

The Minister was replying to a question raised by UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh on the shortfall of meat production in the State.

To a supplementary question from NPP MLA Nihim Shira about the number of buffalo farms in the State, Marak informed that there was just one farm in Songsak with 22,627 buffaloes.

To this, Shira replied that the number of buffaloes in the farm was not even hundred.

The Minister later said that she is ready to examine the figures.
