SHILLONG: The Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday said that the Government will re-examine the enhancement of pension for the ex-MLAs of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Replying to a resolution moved by Garo National Council (GNC) legislator, Clifford Marak on the enhancement of pension for MLAs, the Minister said that the resolution was not justified.

“The Government had in the year 2011 raised the pension benefits of the ex-MLAs (of the State) based on the recommendation of a Cabinet Sub Committee which was constituted for the purpose,” Tynsong said while adding that the matter will be re-examined in due course of time.

Earlier, Marak, while moving the resolution, said that the pension should be enhanced due to growing price rise of essential commodities.

The GNC MLA said that the former MLAs in the State are getting a pension of Rs 13000 per month while in Assam, the pension was around Rs 30000.

The Minister, however, corrected the former stating that the ex-MLAs of Meghalaya are getting a pension of Rs 10000 per month besides medical and other allowances.
