SHILLONG: The State Government has roped in the expertise of Israel to produce quality fish seeds.

Replying to a question by Dr Donkupar Roy (UDP), Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that two fish hatcheries – at Mawpun, Ri-Bhoi and Rongram in Garo Hills – will be developed with the technical expertise from an Israel firm.

In an attempt to improve the increase in the production of fish seeds in the State, the Chief Minister informed that the Government has already set up 16 fish hatcheries in the private sectors.

“We are setting up these hatcheries in the private sector to augment the production of fish seed,” Dr Sangma said.

Replying to a supplementary question by Roy during Question Hour in the Assembly on Friday, the Chief Minister informed that the Government is intending to set up small fish hatcheries farm along the border areas of the State.

“With the increase in the demand of the fish seeds, we are intending to upgrade the existing Government fish farm,” he said.

Dr Sangma also said that through the Aquaculture Mission, the Government is also looking to empower both the fish farmers and also to create more employment opportunities for the youth.
