NONGPOH: The KSU North Khasi Hills district and the CSWO (I) on Monday demanded the dismantling of the entrance gate constructed by the Assam Government at Sabuda within a week failing to which the Union ‘would resort to drastic actions.’ The students’ body also called for cancellation of the SBI branch in the area.

Both the organizations also demanded the immediate stalling of the construction of the entrance gate and the SBI building in Sabuda.

Earlier, to the surprise of both the organizations, the Ri-Bhoi Additional Deputy Commissioner AL Mawlong expressed ignorance on part of the district administration over the ‘two burning issues’ in Sabuda.

The KSU (NKH) and the CSWO (I) had met the ADC to submit a letter of objection over the construction of the entrance gate and SBI building at Sabuda at her office chamber in the absence of the Deputy Commissioner.

Mawlong also said that no action has been initiated by them over the destruction of the approach road constructed under NREGS funds by Assam police in the month of February, this year.

“The statement of the second highest administrative officer of the district contradicted the claim of the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in the floor of the House recently that the government has taken note of the matter and ordered the Ri-Bhoi District Administration to initiate appropriate actions,” Union members said.

In the letter, the two organizations questioned the inaction on part of the district administration following laying of foundation stone for setting up of the SBI branch in the area in January.

The letter pointed out that once the SBI branch becomes functional, Sabuda will be on the bank’s map with Assam as its state.

“The Assam Government had earlier constructed an entrance signboard welcoming to Karbi-Anglong but it was dismantled. They have once again belittled us by reconstructing the same, only this time in a much bigger way with an entrance gate,” the NGOs said.

Stating that the construction of the gate started from March 6, the organizations questioned the lack of steps taken by the district administration to stall the construction which was done on the disputed territory.
