SHILLONG: Travelling to Guwahati for many Shillongites is now not as easy as it used to be few years back thanks to the unruly behaviour of Guwahati Traffic Police.

People who often travel down to Guwahati for business related issues often complain of undue harassment on the part of the Guwahati Traffic police.

There was once instance when some Traffic sleuths in Guwahati questioned a Shillongite who was walking in the city with bags full of goods which he had bought to sell in Shillong and they started harassing him without any reason.

“The cops did not find any reason so they started asking me for the tax challan of these goods,” an aggrieved Shillongite said when he visited Guwahati recently.

“Tell me one thing how come now traffic police are authorized to ask me for tax challan as their job is only to manage the traffic,” he said.

Even tourist vehicles complain about the high handedness of the Guwahati Traffic Police.

Some drivers say that now the enforcement wing of Assam is imposing hefty fines of Rs 3000-5000 on those vehicles which have a carrier where luggage are kept.

“They say that they are checking as per the Supreme Court order but the order says that taxis and Sumos can still use carriers while the use of carrier is banned only for bigger vehicles like buses,” a driver said.

Many drivers from Shillong who travel down Guwahati also complained that the Traffic personnel in Guwahati never listen to explanations when they go down a wrong route or enter any no entry zone.

Even private vehicles going down to Guwahati are becoming victims of such abuse whereby they are stopped without any reason and are asked to produce documents related to their vehicle.
