SHILLONG: The All India Garo Union (AIGU) has suggested Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to convert Shillong city into a full-fledged district.
In a letter submitted to Dr Sangma here on Thursday, the AIGU secretary general WM Sangma said, “It must be the endeavour of the Government to turn the city into a role model district.”
According to AIGU, the move will also enable the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and other government authorities to fully devote themselves in solving the ‘chronic problems of the city.’
Sangma also cited that cities like Guwahati, Kohima, Imphal and Aizawl have already been converted into districts.
The State Government had last year inaugurated four new districts-North Garo Hills, East Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills and South West Garo Hills- taking the total number of districts in the State to 11.
The Union is also of the view that Daddengre which is considered as the oldest sub division may be converted into a full-fledged district while Kharkutta can be upgraded into a sub-division.
The AIGU also urged the Chief Minister to resolve the long pending boundary dispute with Assam at the earliest.
The AIGU also said that the boundary of the State should be demarcated as Survey of India’s observation indicates that Meghalaya is a state without borders.
