SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has demanded an inquiry on the assault of people and the vandalism of shops in Laitumkhrah area during the KSU sponsored procession to observe the Khasi National Awakening Day on Thursday evening.
“An inquiry should be instituted to find out the people who are responsible for committing this act of terror,” Lyngdoh who is also the local MLA of Laitumkhrah said.
Strongly condemning this assault and stone pelting incident, Lyngdoh said that it is shameful to see such an incident when a particular event is being commemorated.
“We all love our nation and the State. But this does not give anyone the license to commit acts of violence,” she said while also demanding that all those responsible for the untoward incidents be brought to book.
The Urban Affairs Minister who was physically present at the place where the incident took place also expressed grave concern at the attack on the two tourists and a pan vendor.
“I would like to know what the miscreants have achieved by assaulting innocent people. This is giving a very wrong message about the State,” the Urban Affairs Minister said.
Reacting strongly to this incident, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said this act of vandalism must be strongly condemned.
“In a democracy, everyone has the right to be proud of their culture and roots. But I do not think it is right to commit violence while celebrating our special day,” Warjri said while also maintaining that as an individual, she is also proud of her roots and culture.
