Agartala: Health service in Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) continues to be affected on the second consecutive day on Saturday following attack by the junior doctors and medical students on a patient’s party, commoners and journalists on Friday.
Both the ruling CPI-(M) and opposition Congress have demanded probe into the incidents and stern action against the accused doctors besides, ensuring security of the patients and doctors in the hospital.
However, the state has ordered magistrate level enquiry into the intire incidents including role of police that had begun at 0735 hrs and continued for till 1200 hrs on Friday uninterruptedly.
Police came into picture allegedly after 1100 hrs and could not do much to control the situation rather police was seen to be protective of themselves, including police superintendent, West Tripura G K Rao.
Meanwhile, anticipating the possible outcome of public outrage against the medical community, junior doctors allegedly in advice of a section of seniors threatened to go for indefinite strike, if anyone of them put under punishment for unruly behaviour.
“We are frustrated because we are deprived of teaching the professors of the medical college have been found on duty in pen and paper, they hardly present in the college or take class and the MD doctors who are elevated as assistant professors and associate professors, we are solely depend on them for our career that may be the reason of such behaviour of the new doctors,” said a third year student of the college.
She alleged a few of so called assistant and associate professors were found clinically sound but they were not efficient in academic dealing of the theories that virtually demoralized the aspiring doctors after second semester.
“The matter has been taken up with the government repeatedly but they didn’t pay any attention to the issues rather the administration forged a nexus with MCI and all ineligible and under qualified people were elevated medical teachers, which is really unfortunate for student like us,” she rued.
However, Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty said that government would inquire the whole episode and the law will take its on course.
Any body found guilty would not be spared as well as the state government will take appropriate steps to restore environment in the college.
At least eight mediapersons were seriously injured Friday when junior doctors and medical students beat them up at a Tripura government medical college and hospital.
“Some medical students and junior doctors attacked the annoyed relatives of a dead patient at the government-run Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and Hospital. When the journalists tried to take pictures of the incidents, medical students and junior doctors assaulted them,” Ramakanta Dey, a senior photo-journalist, told reporters.
Dey, who also seriously injured and being in a hospital, said: “Medical students armed with sticks rushed to the spot from their hostels. At least eight journalists were seriously injured. Their cameras and two-wheelers were damaged by the students.”
Leaders of journalist’s organisations met Health Minister Tapan Chakraborty and demanded stern action against the medical students and junior doctors.
The Agartala Press Club and various media groups have condemned the incident and have demanded a probe into the incident.
“We would conduct a high-level inquiry into the incident and take appropriate steps,” Chakraborty told a delegation of journalists.
