Inadequate skill set cause of unemployment: Mukul

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has asserted that scope for providing jobs in the State is constrained due to inadequate skill sets and low growth of employment opportunities.

While replying to the debate on the Governor’s address, he said that the concern at the moment is that a majority of the educated youth is not equipped with specific skills which could render them employed.

According to Sangma, the Government has setup Meghalaya State Employment Promotion Council and this will coordinate and monitor the execution and implementation of the strategy by various departments and agencies such as the State skill development society, ITIs and polytechnics.

He also informed that there is a proposal to setup at least two vocational institutes in each districts and three secondary and higher Secondary schools will be identified for running courses vocational education.

He pointed out that the partnership with private institutions will be encouraged to establish institutes for running vocational and IT courses. “We will tape optimally the resources available under the various programmes of the Union Ministries,” he added.
