SHILLONG: A war of words erupted between senior politicians Dr Mukul Sangma and Dr Donkupar Roy in the Assembly on Monday when both the leaders blamed each other’s Government for the delay in the construction of the Ganol Power project in Garo Hills.

While replying to the debate on the Governor’s Address, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said the Ganol Power project was sanctioned in 2007 and all necessary exercise was done but in the year 2008, the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) Government did not carry forward the project.

To this reply, UDP leader Donkupar Roy, who was the Chief Minister in the MPA Government, said that Mukul’s statement is tantamount to misleading the House.

“The Chief Minister should verify the facts,” Roy said while giving step by step progress of the project.

He said that the problem erupted when the Congress Government modified the package into a single one whereas the MPA Government had made two packages for the project.

Roy also warned the Chief Minister against bring politics into developmental projects, to which the Chief Minister replied that the Government had to make certain modifications as in the year 2009 no bidder was willing to take up the project due to cost escalation.

However, when the Chief Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to develop the 21.5 MW Ganol Project, Roy said, “The Government should practice what it preaches.”
