SHILLONG: While the Shillong airport at Umroi is lying unused for the past four months, the plans of setting up a bank and a post office near the airport seem to be biting the dust. Sources on Tuesday said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Chief Post Master General, Meghalaya Circle had visited the airport to inquire into the proposal of setting up the two institutions in or around the airport.
As of now, the residents of the four villages near the Shillong airport have to travel around 15 kilometers for their basic banking and postal needs.
Presently, the AAI is finding it quite tough to expand the airport due to scarcity of land and the compensation controversy. According to sources, the Chief Post Master General, Meghalaya requested the State Government to provide land for setting up of a post office. However, the scarcity of available land has jeopardized the entire planning. It is learnt that earlier the AAI official has written a letter to the Chief Post Master General, Meghalaya Circle to set up a post office and the department has also showed keen interest in the same.
