KHLIEHRIAT: In what could be seen as a fall out of the land dispute between Mynthning and Samasi village in East Jaintia Hills District, a group of persons from Samasi assaulted coal labourers employed to work on the village forest land by the Rangbah Shnong and village secretary of Mynthning.

In a complaint lodged with the Khliehriat Police on Tuesday, the Rangbah Shnong and village secretary stated that around 15 miscreants led by one Hosta Salahe of Samasi village came to Mynthing village at around 11:30 am and started assaulting the coal labourers working at the village forest. “Three to four members of the group attacked the village secretary, Wis Manar and attempted to kill him but the police personnel camping nearby intervened to save his life”, the complaint stated.

Both Samasi and Mynthing village claimed ownership of the forest land and in an order issued by the Shillong Bench of the Gauhati High Court, the ownership of the forest land was given to Mynthning village thus restricting the opposite party from the area.

Despite the order, people from Samasi illegally entered the forest land and assaulted the coal labourers working there.
