SHILLONG: The State has incurred a financial loss of Rs 139.31 crore due to the flash floods that occurred during the construction of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydel Project.

Many workers were killed and equipments damaged during the flash floods which occurred at the project site in October, 2009 and May, 2011 while the construction of the power project was underway.

The matter was raised by Paul Lyngdoh (UDP) during question hour in the Assembly on Thursday.

In his reply, Power Minister Clement Marak said that unprecedented heavy rainfall in the catchment areas was the main reason behind the recurrence of floods in the project site.

He also informed that as many 15 lives were lost in the past because of floods.

The Minister also said that cost per unit production was 30 paisa due to time and cost overrun.

He also informed that the government will implement the flood forecasting and warning system to prevent future tragedy at the Myntdu-Leshka project site.
