SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday said that the State Government will take up the matter of unfriendly attitude of banks in the State level banking committee meeting.

He was replying to a discussion on the budget.

He said that the Government is committed to increase the CD Ratio in the State even as institutes like IIM, Shillong and NEHU will give their observation on the need to increase the CD ratio in the State.

The former Chief Minister DD Lapang had earlier slammed the banks operating in the State for their ‘unfriendly attitude’ against the local people, especially villagers, who are keen to deposit their money there.

According to Sangma, the Government from now onwards will be more aggressive while engaging with banks while adding that the Government intends to empower people economically. DD Lapang had earlier said that cash deposit (CD) ratio is low in the State because of this unfriendly attitude of the banks. He also said that there should be banks in all blocks even as the State Government has urged the Reserve Bank of India and the Ministry of Finance to expand the branches of different banks in the State and accordingly, now proposals are coming from different banks for the expansion of their branches in the State.
