SHILLONG: Inauguration of the ambitious Shillong bypass will be delayed for a couple of weeks despite the completion of the road, due to the ongoing security audit of the bypass, an official informed here.

According to the official, the IIT, Guwahati, is currently engaged in the security audit which may take another one week to complete.

“The bypass will be inaugurated only after the security analysis of the road,” the official added.

Since the Shillong Bypass is ready for use, there is growing demand from

many quarters to open it for public use considering the recurring traffic snarls in the capital city which has turned for the worse in the past few days.

The Shillong bypass is expected to provide relief from traffic snarls as heavy vehicles heading towards Jowai and other states can be diverted through the Bypass without having to cross the city.

The 47.06-km bypass, which begins at Umiam in Ri-Bhoi district and ends on National Highway-44 at Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills, was implemented by M/S GR -Chetak (JV) at a cost of Rs 220.35 crore.
