SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has demanded that proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India should be completely dropped.
In a statement addressed to the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma here on Tuesday, KSU General Secretary Auguster Jyrwa said that the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule is based on the ideology of neo-liberalization, globalization and further opening of the way for exploitation and marginalization, mainstreaming, exploitation and suppression of the State’s distinct identity, natural resources and land.
He also said that the proposed amendments aim at to do away with the Sixth Schedule in near future.
“The proposed amendments aim at weakening the powers and functions of the Autonomous District Councils and the traditional tribal institutions and gradual substitution by panchayats and municipality system,” the KSU said.
Jyrwa said that the proposed amendments are being initiated by the Home Affairs Ministry and not by the Tribal Affairs Ministry which is concerned with the tribal people.
