SHILLONG: Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Wednesday said that the Government would examine a proposal which would make it compulsory for State police personnel to learn the local dialects.
“This is a very good proposal. I think it is not a bad idea to make it mandatory for the police personnel to learn the local languages,” Warjri said while replying to a cut motion moved by HSPDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit in the Assembly on Wednesday.
The Home Minister also informed that the Government would work out the modalities to find out if compulsory courses on local languages can be introduce as part of the police training courses.
Earlier, while participating in the motion, Shillong West legislator Paul Lyngdoh (UDP) had suggested that the Police department should make it compulsory for its personnel to learn the local dialects.
“It has been observed that the general public faces great difficulties in communicating with a non-tribal police officer. The public would be able to communicate better if the non-indigenous police personnel can speak the local dialect,” Lyngdoh said.
He also urged the Police department to examine this proposal to allow non-tribal police personnel to learn the local dialect to be able to ensure better communication with the general public.
