Assembly elects PAC, PUC members

SHILLONG: The Assembly has elected the chairmen and members of the Public Account Committee (PAC) and the Public Undertaking Committee (PUC) through elections held on the last of day of the reassembled budget session on Thursday.

Explaining the need for the elections, Assembly Speaker AT Mondal said that as per the rules, both the PAC and PUC should have only five members, but he had received six names each for both the committees, resulting in the elections.

A total number of 55 MLAs voted during the elections.

After the counting, Mondal informed that two of the votes were found to be invalid.

The members of the PAC who were elected were Congress legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh (12 votes), Independent legislator David A Nongrum (10 votes), HSPDP legislator Hoping Stone Lyngdoh (8 votes), UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh (8 votes) and Congress legislator Pynshngain N Syiem (8 votes).

The sixth candidate James K Sangma (NPP) was eliminated from the race since he garnered only 7 votes.

Those who were elected as members of the PUC include Congress legislator Salseng C Marak (13 votes), Independent legislator Hopeful Bamon (10 votes), Pynshngain N Syiem (10 votes), Titosstarwell Chyne (8 votes) and KP Pangniang (7 votes).

UDP legislator Metbah Lyngdoh secured only five votes.

Later, Mondal nominated Hoping Stone Lyngdoh (HSPDP) and Salseng C Marak (Congress) as chairmen of the PAC and PUC respectively.

The Speaker also announced the names of members of the Committee of Estimates with DD Lapang as chairman and Ronnie V Lyngdoh, Nihim D Shira, Hopeful Bamon, Jemino Mawthoh, Witting Mawsor and Marthon Sangma as members.
