SHILLONG: The Assam police allegedly apprehended one Deibor Biam, a local youth from Psiar village in Block-I, while he was returning from his cultivable land on the afternoon of April 17, and later demanded Rs 50,000 for his release.
Sources on Friday informed that Assam police personnel allegedly apprehended Biam for carrying an SBBL gun.
According to sources, the local youth had explained the Assam cops that he had a license for the gun.
“The Assam police personnel did not pay any heed to Biam’s arguments. They took the youth to the Forest office at Grikyndang in Karbi-Anglong, Assam to interrogate him,” sources said.
The Assam police agreed to release the youth following pressure from the Khasi-Pnar residents of Grikyndang village, sources said, adding that they demanded Rs 50,000 as penalty for his release.
“The youth was finally release in the wee hours of April 18 after his relatives paid the amount,” sources said, while adding that the relatives had to arrange for a loan to secure Biam’s release.
