EVM anomaly: hearing on Tuesday

 SHILLONG: After a case was filed in the High Court of Meghalaya regarding the malfunctioning of EVMs and other alleged irregularities, by the defeated candidates of the Congress, Lambor Malngiang (Nongkrem) and Barnabas Nangbah (Jirang), the matter is likely to come up on Tuesday next for hearing.

According to a lawyer associated with the matter, the case was filed in the Court on Tuesday last.

A few votes in one of the

EVMs used under Nongkrem constituency could not be counted after the EVM malfunctioned. Moreover, there were other alleged irregularities according to Malngiang.

Both the Nongkrem and Jirang candidates sought the intervention of the court after they expressed doubt over the efficacy of EVMs.

Sources said that as per Representation of People’s Act, the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court will nominate a Judge to look into the complaint as it is an election matter.
