SHILLONG: The KHADC would be pressing the State Government to approve the delimitation bill which would allow the Council to conduct the MDC elections as per the new delimited constituencies.
Sources said that the delimitation bill which was passed by the Council way back in 2008 is still lingering in the custody of the District Council Affairs department.
Sources have indicated that the Council wants to conduct the MDC elections next year as per the new delimited constituencies considering that the recently concluded Assembly election in the State was also held as per the new delimited constituencies.
“The Council would like to have KHADC constituencies to be more or less similar with the newly delimited Assembly constituencies. If not all, most of the KHADC constituencies should at least fall in line with the Assembly constituencies,” sources said.
As per the Delimitation Bill which was passed by the Council in 2008, the KHADC had proposed to create one more constituency in Ri-Bhoi district.
Besides the four existing constituencies (Nongpoh, Jirang, Umroi and Mawhati), sources said that there was a proposal to create the new MDC constituency of Umsning.
For creation of the new constituency in Ri-Bhoi district, the Council is contemplating to make an adjustment by abolishing the Laban-Mawprem district council constituency, sources said.
According to sources, the KHADC is also planning to create the Laban-Malki constituency and the Laitumkhrah-Nongthymmai constituency.
As it stands at present, Laitumkhrah is a separate constituency while Malki is tagged along with Nongthymmai, sources said.
It may be recalled that sitting Laban-Mawprem MDC Sanbor Shullai had threatened to launch a stir against the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council’s (KHADC) move to abolish the Laban-Mawprem council constituency.
Sources are of the opinion that delimitation of constituencies is the need of the hour at least for the KHADC.
“There is a lot of demand from the people to delimitate the constituencies especially in Ri-Bhoi area as each of the four constituencies in the district have more than 20 thousand voters,’ the sources said.
Sources also said that other constituencies in East Khasi Hills are not as big in terms of population and areas as compared to the constituencies in Ri-Bhoi.
